GPS Map Software

Base Maps vs. Detailed Maps:
The first thing to understand is what people are talking about when they talk about ‘Base Maps’ and ‘Detailed Maps’. A ‘Base Map’ is the mapset that is loaded to the GPS units’ internal memory at factory level and as such cannot be altered or even deleted. Basemaps come in three regional versions, ‘US’ basemaps covering the continental United States (these GPS units get shipped directly to the US from the Garmin factory in Taiwan), ‘Atlantic’ basemaps covering Europe and Africa (these GPS units get shipped directly to the UK) and the ‘Pacific’ basemaps covering Asia and Australasia (these GPS units get shipped directly to Australia).
South Africa is covered under the ‘Atlantic’ basemap.
It must be remembered that Garmin units only have a limited amount of internal memory to use for these basemaps. It is no wonder then that the basemaps (especially of South Africa - a relatively small market for Garmin) are so sparse, with very little detail, and are also very inaccurate.
‘Detailed Maps’ on the other hand are highly accurate maps, which drill down to residential street level details of the major towns and cities around the country.
Detailed Southern Africa Streetmaps are included with every map enabled Garmin GPS unit sold by an authorized dealer in South Africa.
Detailed Map Options for South African GPS users:
Garmap Southern Africa Streetmaps covers the whole of South Africa and neighboring countries, including the routable tar and gravel road network detail for South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho and its selected cities and towns, drills down to residential street level detail of 800 of our cities, major and secondary and includes an extensive POI (Point Of Interest). Ideal for the inner city user, traveling sales rep or businessman and of course the casual holidaymaker making the annual trek down to the coast.
The Garmap Southern Africa Streetmaps, Topo & Rec offering successfully allows for the convergence of the serious outdoor enthusiast and the pavement pioneer. Detailed topographical and recreational information seamlessly overlays with the Southern Africa Streetmaps product providing a comprehensive Southern Africa map base for recreational planning and orientation. Topographic information includes 20m contours, rivers, and forests for the 7 Southern African countries and farm boundary data for South Africa and Namibia.
Other African maps available are the:
- Nigeria Streetmaps, Topo & Rec Maps
- East Africa Street Maps
- Indian Ocean Islands Streetmaps: Mauritius
International Maps:
International maps that are available for purchase from South Africa are:
- City Navigator USA
- City Navigator Australia
- City Navigator Europe
- City Navigator, Middle East
Aviation Databases and Nautical Charts:
Aviation: Garmin also specialize in producing Aviation GPS units, which have various features critical to pilots around the world. A large part of these features are based on their aviation databases, the ‘Jeppesen Database’ and the ‘Obstacle Database’.
The Jeppesen database contains the general aviation data (NavData) used by pilots (Airports, VORs, NDBs, SUAs, etc.) while the obstacle database contains the locations of towers, tall buildings, and other vertical obstructions that could be a potential source of hazard to pilots. The obstacle database is currently only available for a U.S. coverage region, which contains obstacles within the U.S. and limited coverage of the Pacific, Caribbean, Canada, Mexico, and Bahamas. Thus, only the Jeppesen database is of any use to South African Pilots.
Nautical: Much of Garmin’s market has traditionally been the marine market and their marine ‘BlueCharts’ reflect their dominance and experience. The BlueCharts serve up the best offshore marine cartography around and work in seamless integration with a wide range of Garmin chart plotters. They even offer limited compatibility with several of the land/marine combo handheld units. Map areas are shaded like paper marine charts so you can identify intertidal zones, depth contours and more. They are available in Americas, Atlantic, and Pacific versions and offered both on CD and on preprogrammed data cartridges.
African coverage is supplied on the Atlantic version and are divided into three regions, namely:
- Eastern Africa - covering Northern Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia & Madagascar.
- South Africa - covering Southern Angola, Namibia, South Africa & Southern Mozambique.
- Western Africa - covering Northern Namibia right up to and including Morocco.
Map Software and other Garmin map tools on your PC:
MapSource is a map viewing program used to view the maps and is bundled with all the Garmin maps. Garmap Southern Africa Streetmaps (a South African product) is also bundled with the MapSource program ensuring compatibility with Garmin products.
When the MapSource program is loaded to your PC or notebook, all the Garmin compatible maps that you load will automatically be saved into this program and can be chosen from a drop down menu list within the MapSource program. Once your maps are loaded, unlocked to your GPS unit and you have written down all the unlock codes (or saved them on your PC somewhere) you can load the MapSource program (and the individual map products) to as many PC’s or notebook’s as you wish using the unlock codes that you have saved / written down.
This means that you can have a fully functional (PC based) map software program on your work PC, home PC and Laptop / Notebook. PLEASE NOTE: that the maps themselves can be transferred between any of the PC’s but only to the specific GPS unit that they were unlocked to.
Trip & Waypoint Manager is a trip planning CD is designed for use with Garmin units that have no built-in map detail or city point database, such as the eTrex (basic) series, GPS 72, GPS 76, GPS 60 Mono, Geko 201 and Geko 301. With this simple, affordable CD, you get the benefit of being able to create waypoints and routes on your PC and then download them to your unit. You can also transfer waypoints, routes and tracks from your outing back to your PC for recall at a later date. You will not be able to download map detail to any Garmin GPS using this product.

Hi,
I see no mention of Tracks4Africa maps on your Maps page. Any particular reason why you deny your customers of such valuable information?
Let me know if you have not encountered T4A GPS Maps and if I could send you a copy to evaluate.

Tracks4Africa
Hi Johann
Thanks, I specifically wrote this article to only cover the Garmin (licensed) software. I will be covering third party “Garmin compatible” software in a separate article soon.
where could one buy a preloaded sd card with map of australia nuvi 710 ?
Leon
I would strongly suggest that you wait until you get to Australia before buying maps for your 710. The Australian maps purchased in SA are very expensive for some (unknown) reason.
I have a HTC phone with navigon software. It works very well. Where can I buy updates for the maps of the Navigon V6
Hi Jannie
You will have to contact LEAF (the guys that support the HTC phones in SA) for Navigon software updates - 0861 44 5323
I see when I look at the detail of your products, e.g. Garmap 76Csx, it includes in the package “Garmap Southern Africa Streetmaps Map Software on CD.” When I click on this link, it takes me to “GARMAP African Series 2007 DVD” with a cost of R49.00. A explanation follows explaining how this DVD works:
“With this DVD, you will be able to upgrade your current Garmap mapset or acquire any of the map products listed on this page.
You must purchase this DVD from a dealer, load your choice of map products from the DVD to your PC and then purchase an unlocking code online from Garmap to unlock your maps.
By using this DVD you will be able to acquire an unlock code via the Garmap Website and install your product immediately. Please see the individual map product pages below for more info on pricing and map detail”
It then goes on to explain what different products one can purchase, eg. the SOUTHERN AFRICA STREETMAPS V1.5 for R2166 if you have no previous versions of SA Streetmaps.
If I therefore purchase the Garmap 76CSx from you for R6 283, do I still have to buy SOUTHERN AFRICA STREETMAPS V1.5 for R2166 and only receive the DVD worth R50, or do I get the SOUTHERN AFRICA STREETMAPS V1.5 as part of the package of R6 283?
Please explain as you state in you info that “Detailed Southern Africa Streetmaps are included with every map enabled Garmin GPS unit sold by an authorized dealer in South Africa.”
Regards
Hi Jaco
When you purchase any map enabled Garmin GPS from an authorized dealer in SA, you get the Garmap Southern Africa Streetmaps v1.5 (latest version) included in the package.
The DVD (Garmap Africa Series 2007) is for purchase as a standalone product and includes all of the Garmap maps including the Southern Africa Streetmaps v1.5.
The page that those links send you to, is the product page for the DVD which also contains all the product descriptions and details of the individual map products (including the product description for the Streetmaps v1.5).
Depending on which unit you purchase, you will either get the Garmap Southern Africa Streetmaps v1.5 preloaded on an SD memory card (i.e. the “plug-&-Play units like the Nuvi series) or, in the case of the 76CSx, the Garmap Southern Africa Streetmaps v1.5 on a CD. This CD (with just the Streetmaps on) is not available for purchase as a stand-alone product which is why there is no product page dedicated to that specific map product, and which is why we use the product description included on the DVD product page
Hope that helps explain it.
I’ve got the Nokia N95 and I am not sure where or what Navigation software to buy. Can you please assist me? Thank You.
Jeanine
You would need to contact your cellphone dealer for GPS software and maps compatible with the built-in GPS system on your Nokia N95. Also read this post for more info on cellphone GPS.
Hi
How do I get mapsource on my pc?
I want to be able to plot my route myself and then download it to my Nuvi, OR IS THIS NOT POSSIBLE.
Regards
Dean
P.S. I have a Nuvi 200w, sorry I forgot to mention that
Dean
You would need to purchase the Garmap Africa Series 2007 DVD and then load the Garmap Southern Africa Streetmaps v1.5 maps to your PC first. Please also read the post and my answer to this question here.
Hi
I am about to purchase new Garmin 60cx.
My requirements:
1. Find and log down structures within informal rural townships, These towns has no formal street names and numbers systems, I am working with google images or any other Image tif, jpg that I can get transfer to CAD system coordinate Georeference the maps and then download to HPiPAQ handheld unit. I bought Fugawi sometime ago I then had to take the laptop or iPAQ to field link to GPS hanheld and realtime plot postition on laptop using fugawi and my own maps. The old GPS units could not manage any other maps.
It is not good practice to take this assembly laptop, GPS, Cell phone into rural townships as you will get robbed soon.
2. I have to find pump stations all along river lengths 380km long determine what the property name is and log down the coordinates. The farm boundaries on the Garmap could be outdated.
Currently I have to come back to office download to data and plot on my latest farm boundary maps as supplied by other mostly 1:50000 scale topographical maps that I updated and overlay with all farm boundaries on CAD.
Can I use Garmap to georeference any tif/ jpg image with given coordinates transfer then to GPS 60cx and generate my own maps or must I again take my laptop with to field to realtime plot my position and just use the garmin only to export coordinates to laptop. Farm subdivisions change constantly and the only data that I find to be effective for this application directly from the LG office.
Please comment on my request. I do not have enough experience about GPS and garmap to make my final choice.
3. Planning new towns layout using aerial photos georeferenced doing basic layout planning for civil services GPS accuracy 5-8m is OK for this application must confirm position on latest aerial photos. Can Garmap do this realtime with extended memory on the GPS 60 cx
Theo
Basically what you are asking is the equivalent of asking whether you can use a R30.00 handheld calculator to calculate the various possible trajectories of the shuttle spacecraft on re-entry to our atmosphere…
For GIS and GPS surveying work, I would suggest that you stop looking at recreational grade GPS navigation systems and start looking for surveyor quality DGPS (Differential GPS) systems. You can start with the Trimble or Omnistar systems.
Sorry we can’t help you on this one, we only deal with the recreational and navigational side of things
Also take a look at my article Navigation vs Mapping.
Theo,
I know its 2 months later, but if you are still interested contact me as we have extensive experience in what you are trying to do. Contrary to popular believe recreational GPS can be used for this tyoe of application.
If you are doing “as built” plans for the municipality I agree with MadMapper, go for DGPS but it sounds as if you could get away with recreational units. You might also want to look at a couple of inexpensive tools such as Global Mapper which works wonders with georeferncing raster (images).
You won’t be able to use Garmap as this is a proprietary format map. But you could use your own GPS recordings to do so. There are also numerous other sources available.
You mention using Google sat images. You will not be able to change them on Google, but I assume you “borrow” them from Google then - big no-no! If you have budget you could purchase these images and even task them if the ones on archuive is too old. See giscoe.com
We have done a lot of work in exactly the conditions you mention and we developed some tools to interact with Garmin 276 to extract and validate data from teams in the field.
If you want you could reach me at: johann AT tracks4africa.co.za
Is there a way to “Pirate” the unlock codes?
Are you serious???
… Hahahaha
Hi,
I’ve used both Garmin and HandyMap Pro, I find that the maps from HandyMap are far more detailed, especially along the Wild Coast, why cant all the GPS units be compatiable with all the maps available, my Garmin now stays in the cubboard, pity the unit itself is excellent, just the maps are not what I need. Any thoughts?
Hi
I have a HTC TyTN II and acquired the Navigator 6 software which includes the South Africa map and it works 100%. However, I need maps for Southern Africa and it seems both TomTom and GArmin can provide them, but I am not whether either will be compatibe with the Navigator 6 software? Please advise?
Alex
Tom Tom and Garmin map software will only work with Tom Tom and Garmin GPS receivers respectively (they both use proprietary data formats). I do not specialise in cellphones but I do believe that the TyTn II comes with Tom Tom “taster” software included. This would mean that Tom Tom maps could be used. Please check with your local cellphone or Tom Tom dealer first though.
I have loaded T4A maps on my Nuvi 710, but it now seem that the original Garmap has been overwritten. How do I restore the orignal map
Willem
Yes, every time you load a map tile (or tiles) to your unit, it will overwrite the maps already on the unit (this however does not affect the “built-in” maps on some units i.e. European / US maps).
In MapSource, you need to select all of the map tiles that you need (you can change map sets by using the drop down menu) and then upload them all to your unit in one go. This is assuming that you have purchased the Garmap Africa Series DVD and have loaded the Garmap maps to your PC already.
I need software for me Sansui 7355BT GPS please!!!
Louis
You would have to contact Sansui for info on what software is available for your unit. Garmin’s proprietary software will not work with anything other than a Garmin GPS.
Hi
I borrowed my friends Nuvi 760 the other day. I experienced a few “errors” in the route it mapped for me. I was on my way to Vaalpark (Sasolburg) on the R59, when it suggested I must leave the highway and drive through Vereeniging! It actually showed a few places to turn of the highway, although it is ridiculous as the R59 is the best route. A while further it showed me to turn right into Vaalpark, but there is no road. There was a farm road before, but it has been fenced of a few years now. I think there may be a road in future, but not yet. How come these errors are there and how can they be fixed?
I have just purchased the Garmin Colorado 300 from an authorized dealer. In your article it states, and I quote: “Detailed Southern Africa Streetmaps are included with every map enabled Garmin GPS unit sold by an authorized dealer in South Africa.” Imagine my disappointment when I opened the box to discover that all that was included was the Garmap Africa Series DVD. When I load the DVD, it tells me that I need to purchase an unlock code for an additional R999. I was under the impression, both from your article and from what the salesman told me, that the streetmaps are included with the unit. Please can you explain this. It seems very misleading. All that came with the unit was the basemap, which is of very limted use.
Vanessa
The unit has to be registered on the Garmin database first, for them to know when exactly the unit was sold to you (and thus work out that the unlocking of the Streetmaps is free). You can either register on the Garmap website or give them a ring on (011) 251 9999 to get this done. Then, when you run the DVD on your computer, it will connect to the database, find your registration details and figure out that you do not have to pay for the unlocking of the maps. Also see this post for more info.
Do you know of any available maps of Madagascar? I have a Garmin GPS 60csx bought is the U.S.
Mike
Hi Mike
Unfortunately I do not know of any Garmin (or any other brand for that matter) GPS maps for Madagascar. It would seem that the market is a bit small for maps of Madagascar at the moment, so I would assume that they would be last on anyones list to make
did you find any map of madagascar for 60 csx?
if yes, can you send it to me please??
thank you very much
Hi Alex,
do you get any response of your Madagascar map request?
I am searching too for a 60csx - maybe there is a good map around and i can participate - that would be great!
Is leaf the only company in SA that sell the navigon software? Is there better GPS software available for the TyTn 2?
Brett
As far as I know, LEAF are the official distributors in SA. I do not know of anyone else selling the Navigon software at the moment.
Garmin will be making their software compatible with third party GPS chips sometime in the future but we don’t have a specific date yet. It could be weeks, months or years
Hi
I have a Marbella M500 and it works very well. Where can I get updates for the maps.
Ronald
Do you have any maps of Morocco and are they compatible with a Tom Tom unit. I made a mistake and bought one
Hi Marie
Sorry, as far as I am aware, neither Tom Tom nor Garmin make maps for Morocco at the moment. Garmin maps will also not work on a Tom Tom system.
Hi
I have two questions:
1. We have a Garmin Quest II and I’ve upgraded to the Southern African Topo & Rec last year. However, at this stage I’m sticking to my original Southern Africa Streetmaps as the upgrade is too big to fit only my GPS. Any idea how to overcome this, or is it possible to increase the memory. At this stage it looks like I’ve to plan a trip in advance and then just load the tiles of the areas I’ll be passing through on the GPS.
2. Are their maps available for Angola, specifically the southern part.
Thanks
@ Karin
Unfortunately the memory on the Quest units is not expandable. Your plan to just load the map tiles of the areas that you will be passing through would be the only way of doing it.
Angola has not yet been covered on the Garmap mapset. You may want to have a look at the Tracks4Africa mapset for 4×4 trail coverage of Angola (it covers a fair bit of Southern Angola).
Thanks for the feedback. I read a discussion where there was a problem switching between Garmap and T4A maps and that the GPS lost the satellite signal along the way. Is it still the case or has it been solved?
I have not heard of this particular problem before however I do know that the T4A maps can sometimes clash with the Garmap maps when both mapsets are activated at the same time. This generally results in the maps not displaying correctly on the screen or, if they do actually display then the autorouting feature is affected causing the unit to display some rather “interesting routes”
I have never heard of the maps affecting the GPS signal acquisition of a unit.
