Hi Ryan

Hahahahahaha, classic man, classic :-)

Seriously though, if you are looking for basic OEM GPS modules for industrial purposes then take a look at this website. Otherwise, for that price range, you are going to have to wait a couple of years for GPS technology to become "old" technology. Even then... cellphones have been in the mainstream market for a lot longer than GPS and you can't even get GSM chips for that price ;-)

P.S. Oh yes, and if you want detailed GPS maps to use with the GPS unit, they alone would cost you upwards of R1000.

Where can I find a "basic" usb GPS receiver/antenna that I can use on a laptop, that won't break the bank, I've done some searching on local sites and they all charge R600 - R700 for a receiver, in my opinion if any one charges anything over R200 - R300 for just a receiver is commiting daylight robbery and crazy, can you help, I don't care if you source me a second hand one as long as it works
Greatfull for advice and desperate for a break.

Hi Lindo

It's good to see that GPS technology is becoming more mainstream, even to the extent of being used for study purposes ;-)

Please sign up for our free email course 'What you should know before buying a GPS'. The email course is broken down into 7 easy-to-digest sections which will be emailed to you over a 7 day period. This will give you all the basics as well as some important background information on GPS technology as it stands today.

Hi Ray

Yes, there are many brands that are starting to appear in SA, which is a good thing as far as competition goes (I see that Laipac is more involved in the GPS tracking and OEM industry than in the navigation industry though).

The biggest problem with all the new brands in SA is the availability of good South African mapping software as well as technical support for these products, especially on the navigation side of things - after all, a navigation GPS unit is only as good as the maps it uses.

Also, Garmin have such a strong hold on the market at the moment that it is going to take a tremendous effort from any new entries to the market to catch up. And when they finally get to the stage that Garmin are at now, where will Garmin be?
